The following are some of the upcoming local, and a few non-local, events which the Amnesty International Leeds group is involved in. So begins a new year of campaigning. At the moment we are planning all the events for 2012 so to get an impression of what we do please see last year below. As soon as we get some definite dates and details I will get them up on the website.
In the meantime let me take this opportunity to thank all those people who contributed to making 2011 such a successful year and wish all those people around the world who in one way or another will be campainging for Human Rights our best wishes.

This is your opportunity to experience the talent and enthusiasm of the Bradford Music Club, who have made it a tradition to share their last meeting of the year in aid of Amnesty. Come and listen, and next year you might be performing.
We will once again be writing letters to those in power to hold them to account on the cases in the Greeting Cards Campaign. All information will be provided and all you need to bring is your good will but any additional non-religious cards are always appreciated.
The chamber choir of St Aidan’s C of E High School in Harrogate won the BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year competition in 2006, and has reached the finals 6 times. We are thrilled to welcome members of this young choir along with musicians from the school’s symphony orchestra.

David Robertson of Theatre of the Dales and Maggie Mash of Trio Literati will read from 84, Charing Cross Road, and actors from the Royal Armouries will perform Only Water Between, Peter Spafford’s moving adaptation of letters and memoirs from World War One.
Deborah Pennington (clarinet), Amy Cherryholme (flute) and Mata Williams (piano) will perform a programme of original and specially-arranged classical pieces. Promises to be a musical treat.
Amnesty Internaitonal Leeds is hosting a pair of presentations concerning Stop Violence Against Women. There will be two presentations, one will focus on violence against women within the UK and the other wil focus on violence against women around the world. The presentations will be followed by an opportunity to informally discuss the issues rasied after the event.
DirectionsFrom the junction of Portland Way and Woodhouse Lane walk up Woodhouse Lane out of town a short distance and on your left there will be a large glass fronted building which is the City Campus of Leeds Metropolitan University. Walk in and the lecture theatre LBT1 will be on your left hand side just before the Coffee bar. There should be people or signs around to direct you to the lecture theatre as soon as you walk through the main entrance.
Old friends in new combinations: Colin Honour (clarinet), Andy Long (violin), Katie New (violin), Liz Wyly (viola), Juliet Welchman (cello) and Annette Saunders (piano) will perform Mozart’s clarinet quintet, Brahms’ piano quintet and a few surprises. Not to be missed.
We look forward to a virtuoso mix from Elizabeth (oboe and cor anglais) and Richard (piano) Kenwood-Herriott, including music for piano by Ralph Vaughan Williams and the oboe sonata by Edmund Rubbra.
Theatre of the Dales give a forties twist to this joyful tale of love found, lost and found again – a perfect outdoor summer’s entertainment. Some seating, but feel free to bring a cushion, blanket, or deck chair.
A festival of writing letters for Human Rights. This is an opportunity to write many campaigning letters all in one go. About 12 letters will be available, with background information on each, a standard letter, which if you prefer you can just sign, envelopes and even a colletion tin to make donations to cover postage. What's more there will be some light refreshments so you can relax for a few moments inbetween!

This virtuoso violin and piano duo makes a welcome return to our series to perform works from the great German repertoire, including Bach, Brahms and Kreisler.
Jane Anthony’s outstanding opera students from the Leeds College of Music will transport us to Italy, Spain, Russia and places known only to the imagination for scenes of love, betrayal, comedy and pathos.
Once again we warmly welcome Arioso to open our series, with a banquet of vocal and instrumental music representing the “stylus phantasticus” of the 17th century, including English and Italian composers Johnson, Lanier, Lawes, Frescobaldi, Carissimi and Monteverdi
Each year members of all the AI UK groups and national members get together at our annual general meeting to discuss and makes decision about how AI UK Section will campaign for Human Rights. In addition this gives us the opportunity to hear various speakers and attend workshops.
Typically AI Leeds Group sends a quartet of our members to strut their stuff so to avoid us forgetting it seemed a good idea to include this in our events.
The Red Hand Day of Action to Prevent Child Soldiers is on Saturday April 16th on Albion Street. We need support throughout the day from 9.30 - 4:30 pm, two hour stints are ideal. We will aim to educate passers by and get them to sign red hands which will then be used to influence those governments which have not yet signed and ratified the Rights of The Child protocol on banning the use of children under the age of 18 yrs as combatants.
If you can help out then either turn up on a day and make yourself known or contact the group secretary Clive_Briscoe, who will pass on your email to the organisers.
Gabriel, from Kabinda will be relating his experience as a child soldier and how he eventually got leave to remain in this country. He has now been elected to the parliament in waiting of his country as the youngest member. He is a charismatic young man full of hope and enthusiasm to bring peace and prosperity to his people. He is travelling regularly from his home in Leeds to Switzerland where he has been helping write the country’s new constitution.

Colin Honour, clarinet, and friends from Opera North (Martin Pickard, piano; Liz Wyly, viola; Claire Sadler, double-bass) have prepared an autumn soiree of light romantic music to warm the cockles of your heart.

We are privileged to present Rene Waterman, concert pianist and well-loved teacher, with her gifted pupil Catherine Leather, in a programme to include music by Haydn and Brahms, and the great Fantasia in F minor by Schubert. Highly recommended.
Take a musical journey from Bach to Prokoviev with two talented young students: Adrian Cheng Un Chan, piano, and Alastair Kwan, violin. Alastair will be joined by pianist Miaoyin Qu, who makes a welcome return to our series.
Arioso, the acclaimed early music group, takes us to the 16th and early 17th centuries, with dances and lutesongs and some of the earliest known examples of truly operatic music

A massive street party and scene based events in the heart of Leeds organised by the Leeds lesbian and gay community. The Amnesty International Leeds group will be taking part as it´s not only great fun but to remind people that being able to choose and express your sexual orientation is a human right. A human right that sadly does not exist in all communities around the world.
We are thrilled that this hugely popular choir from Nottingham is able to make a return visit to this year’s series. They appear fresh from appearances on TV and festivals and will take us on a musical repertoire from madrigals to the Beatles. company in a wonderful, pre-tour production full of magic, music and song.

Asylum Monologues is an account of the UK asylum system told first-hand in the words of the people who have experienced it. Scripted by award-winning playwright and Artistic Director of Ice and Fire theatre, Sonja Linden, it is an important and powerful work.
We are delighted to welcome three outstanding musicians, Miaoyin Qu (pianist from China), Ilias Devetzogluo (violinist from Greece) and Pavlos Hoplaros (violinist from Cyprus) who will play popular favourites by Vivaldi, Kreisler, and Ravel.
From 11pm on Saturday 16th June to 6am on Sunday 17th June at Mill Hill Unitarian Chapel. Many organisations at both a national and local level, including Amnesty International, Refugee Council, Church Action on Poverty and many others too numerous to mention, have joined together in a campaign called Still Human, Still Here dedicated to highlighting the plight of refused asylum seekers. As part of this campaign a sleepout has been organised in Leeds to raise local awareness of this issue.
It’s a special pleasure once again to open our series with a concert by this well-loved baroque ensemble who will delight us once more with a choice of vocal and instrument offerings.
All money raised by this walk will be used to support destitute asylum seekers.
Amnesty International Leeds group is campaigning on the issue of destitute asylum seekers being denied basic human rights (see the recent Amnesty report). On Saturday December 9th members of the group will be sleeping rough, in Leeds city centre in solidarity with destitute asylum seekers, hoping to raise the profile of the situation and to show solidarity with their fellow human beings who are being denied such basic human rights.

Three members of the Amnesty International Leeds group, with nerves of steel and highly developed calf muscles, are cycling from John O´Groats to Land´s End to raise awareness of Amnesty International´s work and to raise funds. In order to get there, they will need lots of motivation which you can provide with a small donation.
