TITLE: Still Human, Still Here Sleepout; Summer 2007 ( Leeds)
WHERE: Mill Hill Unitarian Chapel,
Lower Basinghall Street
Leeds
LS1 5EB
Just off the City square, Leeds
WHEN: From 11pm on the Saturday 16 th June to 6am on Sunday 17 th June
Many asylum seekers whose claims are turned down are unable to return home. But they are denied all state support, are thrown out of their housing and are not allowed to work. They have no money for food, no money for shelter, no money for the everyday things we take for granted. This misery is a direct consequence of government policy. Destitution is being used to drive people out of the country – but many thousands cannot leave and are now homeless and hungry.
Many organisations at both a national and local level, including Amnesty International, Refugee Council, Church Action on Poverty and many others too numerous to mention, have join together in a campaign called Still Human, Still Here dedicated to highlighting the plight of refused asylum seekers.
As part of this campaign a sleepout has been organised in Leeds to raise local awareness of this issue (see above). If you would like to come and spend the night or show your support for a few hours, please contact Clive Briscoe, preferably by email, so he knows to expect you and can send you further information.
